Original burying ground of Columbian College, located at north end of college property. Property acquired 1819, college building erected 1820, charter granted 1821. First known burial here 1831 (Ephraim R. Nelson), last one 1860 (John Samuel H. Hammett), or possibly 1861 (John Withers). On (and about) 30 April 1866, bodies were removed and reinterred in a new cemetery on the south slope of College Hill on the college grounds. (See George Yost Coffin diaries.GW Archives.) In 2005, the iron coffin of William Taylor White was uncovered at 1465 Columbia Road NW, pinpointing the original burying ground's location (the casket and body are now at Smithsonian).
