Add PhotosThe huge losses in human lives recorded after the battles for the conquest of Odessa, almost 18,000 dead, led to the appearance in the Odessa region of several campaign cemeteries, some of the most important being arranged on the territory of Văcărjani commune (currently Kurgan commune, Beliaevski district, Odessa region, Ukraine), where the units of the Border Guard Division, commanded by General Gheorghe Potopeanu, were almost completely decimated.
Between September and November 1941, on the southern edge of this locality, on the right of the Odessa-Tiraspol road, on an area of over seven hectares, the Romanian military authorities arranged five Romanian campaign cemeteries, in which over 1,100 soldiers were buried. Romanians, most of them former combatants in the 1st, 2nd and 5th operative border regiments.
On November 19, 1942, Soviet military units destroyed all Romanian campaign cemeteries on the territory of the former Soviet Union, including war graves in the commune of Vacarjani.
In 2009, on the territory of the current commune of Kurgan, former Văcărjani, a commemorative sign, of cross type, was installed in memory of all Romanian soldiers who fell on duty in these places.
