Add PhotosThis is the original M.E. Burial Ground for the area. There is no cemetery left to see. There are no records for which bodies were removed by family members or those simply deposited at Southside in a pit grave, where it's estimated that 500 bodies were "reinterred". Records for these removals were not kept by Southside.
(Pittsburgh Press, 17 Sep 1926, p5)
On petition of trustees of the Bingham Street Methodist Episcopal church, the old burial grounds of the church at Brownsville Rd., Hays ave. and Bertha Way, Mt. Oliver, were ordered vacated in Quarter Sessions court today by Judge John A. Evans.
In their petition, the trustees stated no burials have been made in the cemetery for over 20 years and that many of the bodies have been removed. The presence of the cemetery, it was stated, hindered improvements. The bodies still in the old burial plot will be removed to the Southside cemetery.
Methodist Cemetery . Abandoned. Burials from 1838 to 1927.Some graves moved to South Side Cemetery.
All records were destroyed when the Duncan Glass Works on the South Side burned in the 1880's.
There is marker in the South Side Cemetery inscribed " In memory of members of Bingham Street M.E. Church 1839-1927".
South Side Cemetery has no listing for the burials in the "OLD SINGLES" section.
Cemetery was located along Brownsville Rd. at the corner of Ormsby and Hays Avenues.
