Add PhotosIt has been called the Hansford Cemetery for many years and dates back to the early 1700's. It was a family cemetery many years before the Revolutionary War.
The huge Sycamore Tree is said to be about 500 years old. (1997). It was over 80 feet tall during the Revolutionary War. For many years Sea Captains and Boatmen coming in Back River would take a bearing on this Tree and set their course to come in the River without any difficulty. It was called the "LOOK OUT" tree. About 1977 lighting struck it and knocked the top out of it.
Elizabeth (Jett) Oldfield, Robert Jetts's daughter said this Cemetery was many times larger than it is now. She knows it was originally a very large Cemetery, as the years went by and the fields were plowed and crops planted the Cemetery became smaller.
Above information from the book, Cemeteries of the City of Hampton Virginia, Formerly Elizabeth City County, compiled by Barry W. Miles, edited by James H. Mero and Joseph A. Atkins. Published by Heritage Books, Inc.
