Add Photos"The Church of Christ, the family of God in Abbeville, S.C., was planted in 1956. This is how she got her start:
In 1956 Amanda Lyons, who at the time was ninety years old, was visiting her daughter Julia Walker in Detroit, Michigan. Julia Walker was a member of the Ford Avenue Church of Christ. The Ford Avenue Church of Christ was sponsoring a gospel tent meeting at that time. The great R.N. Hogan was doing the preaching and Sister Walker took her mother to the meeting each night. Amanda Lyons had been young and now she was old. She had been a member of a church for most of her life, but she had never heard any preacher take the bible, the words of God and point out the church that Jesus built (Matthew 16:18). Amanda Lyons had never heard this before in her life. She could not feel good anymore until she was a member of that church. So, she was baptized into Christ according to Galatians 3:26-27 which reads, "For we are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
When Sister Lyon's vacation was over she came back home, telling her family and anyone that would listen. "There is only one church in the Bible" she had now learned that all that praying to get a religion was not found in the Bible. She had learned that you worship God every first day of the week, not once a month. That when you worship you should sing and give and take the Lords' supper and teach God's word and you are commanded by the God of heaven to do this each week.
But there was no such church like this in Abbeville, South Carolina at the time, so she had a problem. What was she going to do and how was this problem going to be solved? Everyone at the Ford Avenue Church of Christ started trying to come up with a solution. Alonzo Rose, who was the minister of the Ford Avenue Church, began calling his friends asking them to help him set up a church in Abbeville, S.C."
