Rhijnhof was originally a country house. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the other cemeteries in Leiden were almost full and thus a new cemetery had to be built. It was decided that this cemetery would be built on the Rhijnhof estate. The cemetery contained crypts, own graves and rental graves. The first burial took place on 24 May 1910. During World War II, Rhijnhof had an important strategic position. In both May 1940 and September 1944, the cemetery could therefore not be used for burials and the dead were buried at Begraafplaats Groenesteeg. Their remains were later reburied at Rhijnhof. Later in World War II, wood was no longer available. Coffins could no longer be made and thus re-usable coffins were used. The dead were buried without coffins. In the 1960s, Begraafplaats Zijlpoort closed. Rhijnhof expanded with a Roman-Catholic area. In 1991, a Crematorium was built. Another expansion in 1996 saw an urn wall, a pier and an Islamic area built.
