Add PhotosOn 22 September 1835 Daniel Hullinger and Comfort Hullinger, his wife, sold to Benjamin Evans for the price of ten dollars; one acre, lying on the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 16, Township 3 Range 12 of the Miami Rivers Survey in Champaign County, Ohio. Beginning at the corner of said acre to commence seven rods south to the northwest corner of said half quarter section thence eight rods south thence twenty rods east, thence eight rods north, thence twenty rods west to the place of the beginning. This deed was duly recorded on 1 August 1836.
On 17 November 1838 Daniel and Comfort Hullinger sold the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 16, containing eighty and one half acres of land, to Benjamin Evans. However, this deed was in error because it included the one acre of land previously sold to Benjamin. On 13 May 1839 Benjamin Evans and his wife Demarias Evans, sold the correct acreage: west half of the northwest quarter of Section 16, except "one acre near the northwest corner where the meeting house stands" to Joseph Hullinger. On 20 April 1840 Joseph Hullinger and his wife, Elizabeth Hullinger resold the land to Benjamin Evans, excepting "one acre near the northwest corner where the meeting house stands."
When Benjamin Evans died his estate was settled in the Champaign County Chancery Court; filed 19 April 1847. However, the one acre "where the meeting house stood" was not transferred. Nor, was it transferred by his wife, Demarias Evans before her death. The one acre property must remain in the name of Benjamin Evans until the end of time.
The length of time that the meeting house stood upon the one acre and the denomination of the congregation have not been determined.
The cemetery is located in Johnson Township, Champaign County, Ohio, and is # 1541 (Ward Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1047557 (Ward Cemetery).
