The earliest known burials at the Shilo Cemetery were two children of early settlers buried in 1846. In the 1860s a church was located about one-half east of the cemetery. The church building was shared by the Presbyterians, Methodists and Baptists. The property containing the bulk of the cemetery was sold to Rev. James Beckham and his wife Sallie in 1889. The Beckhams were African American, and African American graves are not segragated in the cemetery. Blacks, Whites and Mulattos continued to be buried at Shilo long after it passed back to Anglo ownership in 1896. The number of burials declined in the 1930s; the 1940s saw only one burial, and the last two known burials were in 1952 and 1954. By 1977, the condition of the cemetery had declined to the point of meriting a mention in the local newspaper, the Bonham Daily Favorite. Mildred Welch, a columnist, wrote of a letter received from a recent visitor describing the "forlorn forgotten state of the cemetery" where a "fence is mostly missing…undergrowth and good sized trees create a dense shade…and the only way to penetrate this dense brush was following the cattle paths that crisscrossed the cemetery from all directions." During the winter of 2010, Fannin County Historical Commission members Larry Standlee and Susie Henderson took an inventory of Shilo Cemetery. They photographed the stones they could find and uploaded the pictures onto the txfannin.org website. This website has expanded to include more information about the interred such as family relations, military history, death certificates and more. Known individuals interred at Shilo Cemetery currently number 189. Over one-third of these are infants and young children, an attestment to the hardships of life on the Texas frontier. A handful were people born in the late 1700s who lived into their 70s and 80s. Some graves bear simple bois d'arc markers, a large number are stone with obelisks, scrolled corbels, or carvings of lambs, hands, wreaths, doves, willows, and masonic markings. There are a number of family plots framed by a variety of fencing – iron, barbed wire, chain link and wood, although some are not yet accessible due to overgrowth." Sadly by 2019, the cemetery looked just as it was described in 1977. Many of the stones are laying on the ground in pieces. With the help of the current property owner and the leadership of Marianne McCann Jones, the thicket surrounding the cemetery has been removed, and volunteers have begun clearing the overgrowth of trees, vines and brambles, as well as dozens of fallen trees, inside the cemetery. A perimeter fence is to be built by the owner to stop cattle and hogs from cutting through.
