Pleasant Grove Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1856 by former members of the Sandymount Methodist Church, who disagreed with some members of Sandymount over issues concerning slavery. Balconies were built in the new church where slaves could sit to worship together with them under one roof.
The church and the cemetery were put on two separate deeds in 1922.
In 1939, when the Methodist Protestant and Methodist Episcopal Church united, Pleasant Grove voted to rejoin Sandymount. Pleasant Grove held services until May 1943 when the congregations merged to become Sandymount Methodist Church. The Pleasant Grove Church property was sold during 1979 to people who hoped to convert it into a single family dwelling.
The cemetery is now run by a corporation. The corporation's treasurer has some cemetery records in his possession, but they are incomplete. A plat of the cemetery existed at one time, but could no longer be located. Inscriptions were copied by Kimberly Slattery (who also did the research and drew the cemetery layout map) during April 1987. Most of the gravestones are in rows running parallel to the back wall of the church. A few stones between rows were grouped with whichever row they seemed to have a family connection with. Boundaries of family plots as indicated by initialed corner markers are included in the diagram. Inscriptions were recorded beginning at the end of the driveway and working right to left. On 11 Jan 1890, "The Democratic Advocate" listed interments through 25 Oct 1889. "Lost stones" identified through this article are included as row "double zero" at the end of the inscriptions.
