The wording states: "Santa Maria Cemetery District. This burial ground contains the remains of many of Santa Maria's pioneer families. Completed in 1883 the I.O.O.F. and F. & A.M. Cemetery replaced the city's origianl Thornburg-Jones Cemetery established in 1872. Removal of all remains to the new I.O.O.F. and F. & A.M. Cemetery was completed by 1886. In August of 1917 the Santa Maria Cemetery District was created. The cemetery was renamed the Santa Maria Cemetery District. This plaque commemorates the historical, social, and cultural contributions of the many citizens of the Santa Maria Valley interred at this location. Declared Historical Landmark No. 11 by the City of Santa Maria April 20, 1999."
