The history of the Saratoga Union
congregation dates back to the
Norwegians and Danes who were
among the early settlers of the
area. Early in the 1880's a traveling
preacher remembered only as
"Gamle Johan" or "Old John" began
making periodical visits to Saratoga.
His home was near Junction
City from where he served a circuit
of Scandinavian settlements.
He was succeeded by Olaus Kittilson,
also of Junction City, who began
making his visits to Saratoga in
about 1886. Services were held in
the old log schoolhouse which used
to stand on the corner of the old
Planfield road and the Behrend-
Hamann road.
In 1888 Ole Einertson donated the
land for Saratoga Union Cemetery,
what is now the Pioneer Cemetery.
