Varna Holt, 80, Nightingale Drive, Somerset, died Wednesday, April 10, 1996, at Audubon Regional Medical Center, Louisville.

He was born in the Dykes community on April 5, 1916, son of the late James M. and Mertie Farmer Holt. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. An interim former director of Lake Cumberland Home Health Agency, he was a former member of Somerset City Council, former state representative, and former school teacher at Shopville. He was formerly associated with Southern Belle Dairy and currently a director of Cumberland Security Bank. He and Oscar Hornsby were partners in the former Hornsby-Holt Chevrolet Company, now Jeff Treado Automotive Group. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Richardson Holt, whom he married on July 13, 1960; a son, Jim Tom Holt, Nashville; a stepdaughter, Katie Norfleet Lehmenkuler, Louisville; three brothers, Delvin (and Emogene) Holt, Roy (and Alma) Holt, and Russell (and Hazel) Holt, all of Somerset; a sister, Katherine Hamm, Somerset; and two step-grandchildren, Michele McCauley and Michael Lehmenkuler.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edna Calhoun.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church with Dr. Michael A. Gatton officiating.

Burial will be in the Somerset Cemetery.

Friends may call at Somerset Undertaking Company after 4 p.m. today, and at the church after 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund.

Former state Rep. Varna Holt died Wednesday at Columbia Audubon Hospital in Louisville. He was 80.

Holt was elected in 1954 and served one term in the state legislature. He served on the Tourist Commission for six years and on the Lake Cumberland Home Health Board for 12 years. He also had served on the board of directors of the Cumberland Security Bank for a number of years.

Somerset Undertaking Company is handling arrangements.
