John Wesley Tippy, Sr., age 86, of Murphysboro passed away at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2007, at his residence in Murphysboro.

John was born on September 19, 1920, in Jonesboro, to Hosea and Cora Belle (Carter) Tippy, and was their only child. He married Ruth Neace of Sand Ridge on July 29, 1942. She preceded him in death on September 25, 1981.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 -- 1946 in Maryland as a drill instructor and in Iran as a turret lathe operator with the rank of Technical Sergeant. After the war, he and Ruth purchased a one-room house on an acre of cornfield. They enlarged the house, added trees and flowers, and it was his home until his death.

Mr. Tippy began working for J. T. Blankinship and Associates Consulting Engineers in 1947, and worked there for sixty years as a survey party chief and resident engineer.

He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1947 at the Mt. Carbon Church of God. He served there for many decades as the Sunday School Superintendent, board member and Adult Bible Class teacher. He was at the time of his death a member of the First Church of God of Murphysboro. John and Ruth were very active in their service to the Lord, both with the church organization and in their daily lives.

John was a loved man by all who knew him. He had a ready laugh and enjoyed being with people. He showed his compassionate and generous nature by taking care of elderly friends, who were in the nursing homes or housebound.

He was interested in everything, geology, sailing ships and motion pictures to name a few. He loved to travel and visited 41 states. He saw most of his life though the lens of his camera, a hobby he began as a teenager. He photographed everything, leaving behind thousands of pictures.

He is survived by his son John W. Tippy and his wife Mary Tippy of Murphysboro, daughter Ruth Ann Sands and her husband Malcom Sands of Carbondale, and daughter in law Pamela Tippy. His son Frank preceded him in death on August 1, 2004.

John leaves eight grandchildren Susie Smith, Julie Wachtal, Michael Tippy, Nathan Tippy, Samantha Tippy, Veronica Tippy, Benjamin Tippy and Allison Sands; and twelve great grandchildren.

He also leaves two sister in laws and three brother in laws, many nieces and nephews, his church family, and long time friend Susan Varner.
