Col Hugh Nelson was the third child of President William Nelson and Elizabeth Burwell Nelson. He married, about 1775, Judith Page, the 2nd daughter and 5th surviving child of the Honorable John Page, of North End, Gloucester (now Matthews) County, Va. and Jane Byrd, his wife. The children of Col Nelson and wife Judith were:

1. Jane Byrd Nelson, born about 1776; married, 1798, Honorable Francis Walker, of Castle Hill, Albemarle County, Va.
2. Lucy Nelson, born about 1778, married, May 16, 1798, Edmund Pendleton, Jr., of Caroline County, Va., and was his second wife.
3. Captain Thomas Nelson, born about 1780, removed to Oakland, Hanover County, Va., and married, 1804, Judith, youngest child of Governor Thomas Nelson, of Yorktown, Va.
4. Dr. Nathaniel Nelson, born about 1786, removed to The Lodge, Hanover County, Va., and married, about 1811, Lucy Mann, eldest daughter of Mann Page, of Shelly, Gloucester County, Va.
5. Carter Nelson, born about 1788, died single.
6. Frances Edmonia Nelson, born about 1790, died single. She had a talent for drawing and was an artist.
7. Maria Nelson, born about 1794; burned to death in the Richmond Theatre, Dec 26, 1811, aged 17. Her body was identified by the watch of Hon. Francis Walker, her brother-in-law, of Castle Hill, Albermarle County, Va. Dr. Robert W. Nelson, of Charlottesville, had the watch, and a little diamond belonging to it was in possession of Dr. R.C.M. Page of New York.
