Mary Elizabeth (Hobson) Cornwell was born on October 18, 1860 in near Woodford, Montgomery County, Tennessee, the daughter of Henry Hobson and Celia Caroline (Colburn) Hobson (1837–1923).

She was married about 1886 to Love S Cornwell Jr, who was born about August 1846 in Mississippi, the son of Love S "L S" Cornwell Sr (1811–1888) and Martha S ( -- ) Cornwell (1819–1856). At the time of the 1900 census, Mary and Love Jr were living in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Love Jr died sometime before the 1910 census, as which time Mary was in Nashville, Davidson County.

Mary was an active member of Sango Methodist Church and in later life was back to living near Woodford. She was 74 years old and a long-time widow when she died of pneumonia at home on January 7, 1934, after being ill for three years.

Survivors included son W M Cornwell in Chattanooga, Tennessee, daughter Mrs S A Nichols of Woodford, brother W H Hobson and sister Mrs Belle Negles of Port Royal, Tennessee.

Funeral Services were held on January 7th at Sango Methodist Church, and burial was in Sango Cemetery.
