KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — After more than three decades, a 1989 Knoxville murder case of an off-duty police officer was concluded this week.
Officer Tony Williams was shot and killed while riding his motorcycle on Cherry Street near Interstate 40
A Knox County grand jury recently found there was enough probable cause to charge Johnny Edgar Warwick with first-degree murder in the case. Warwick died in November 2023, shortly before the Grand Jury's resolution.
"I was happy at first until I read into the article and the Grand Jury papers." Shane Houck, Williams' friend said.
Houck describing his friend as big in stature with a personality to match it.
"Tony was a gentle giant. He was larger than life. He made you feel like you couldn't be hurt," Houck said. "He was a protector."
Williams was 24 years old when he was shot and killed.
"He was an aspiring young man. He wanted to further his law enforcement career," Houck said. "He wanted to serve the community."
Former chief of the Knoxville Police Department Phil Keith described Williams as a stellar athlete who was always there if you need something.
"He would never turn his back on you he was always first to step up and help and he has a special place in my life," Keith said.
Though there are answers to the case, but both Keith and Houck agree there will never be closure
"I relived July 7, 1989 all over again sitting in my car," Houck said. "I'm kind of torn with it, per se, after all this time. After 34 years, it's been a minute."
"People use the word loosely closure, you can't close the death of Tony Williams, not in my book," Keith said.
