John Thomas Mull was born the eldest son of David Conrad and Cynthia Ann Beem Mull in Spencer, IN. His mother, Cynthia, died before he was 10 years old. He grew up in Spencer with 3 brothers, William, George, & Richard. His father remarried and the family increased. His maternal grandparents were Neely Beem & Leah Storm Beem Walker.

John enlisted for service on June 7, 1861 during the Civil War in Terre Haute, IN. He entered as a private and was promoted to Full Sargent. He mustered out on June 6, 1864 in Indianapolis, IN. He was a member of Company H Indiana 14th Infantry. This regiment was also known as the "Gallant Fourteenth" a part of the Gibraltar Brigade of the Army of the Potomac.

John filed for a Civil War Pension on July 16, 1879. In the 1880 Christian Co, IL Census, he reports his occupation as a bolt cutter in the railroad shop at Pena, IL.

He married Lizzie D Eason on Oct 31, 1865 in Christian Co, IL. They had 3 children: Laura, Walter & Ida.
