He was a member of Company H Indiana 14th Infantry. This regiment was also known as the "Gallant Fourteenth" a part of the Gibraltar Brigade of the Army of the Potomac.
John filed for a Civil War Pension on July 16, 1879. In the 1880 Christian Co, IL Census, he reports his occupation as a bolt cutter in the railroad shop at Pena, IL.
He married Lizzie D Eason on Oct 31, 1865 in Christian Co, IL. They had 3 children: Laura, Walter & Ida.
