FARMER STRICKEN; DIES SUDDENLY
John C. Brooks, age 62 years, a retired farmer residing at 865 Park avenue, was stricken with heart trouble shortly after 6 o'clock last evening and died a half hour later at his home.

Mr. Brooks left for his farm four miles south of the city, know as "The Means", accompanied by his nephew, Boyce Neff, who conducts the farm, at 3 p.m. He left the farm at 5 o'clock.

He was returning from his farm and suffered the attack at West Grand avenue and Laurel street. When he began to feel ill, he climbed out of his wagon and went to the nearest house for assistance. Unfortunately, the house was vacant. Aid never reached him until at least ten minutes later when E.O. McConnell [editor note: another article has William McConnell, Sr.] , a friend and farmer residing two and one-half miles south of Springfield, who was driving to the city in his automobile, saw the condition of the man. He was found lying in a prostrate condition near the intersection of the streets. Upon recognizing that the man was Mr. Brooks, the driver of the automobile took him to Wallaces's drug store, West Grand and Lawrence avenues where Mr. Brooks' street address was learned.

He was then taken by Dr. Metcalf to his home in a critical condition where he dies about ten minutes after his arrival there, never regaining consciousness. Dr. Roy F. Rogers was called, but it was considered useless to bring the pullmotor into use.

He was born in Orleans, Indiana, and moved to Sangamon county when 16 years old. He began farming when 21 years old in this county and remained on the farm until four years ago when he retired from active labors and moved to 865 Park avenue in Springfield.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hannah Brooks; three sons, Rufus B., of Hooper, North Dakota; Orville, residing seven miles north of Springfield on a farm; and Earl, at home; five daughters, Mrs. Laura Holliday, Mrs. Maud Dickerson, Mrs. Minnie Poff, Mrs. Mary Rutherford, Mrs. Edna Brimbarger, all of Springfield; one grandchild, Frances Brooks, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Sloma Stebbelton, of Springfield; Mrs. Henrietta Ambrose, of Blue Mounds; Mrs. Mary Daughman, of Blue Mound; and Mrs. Anna Hargrave, of Stonington; and one brother, Joseph, of Kansas, Ill.

He was a member of the Douglas Avenue M.E. church.

The funeral was held at the family residence.

The interment was made in Oak Ridge [sic] cemetery.
