F.H. ''Mac'' McCain, died Sept. 21, 2001, in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Charlotte, N.C. on Jan. 16, 1927, to the late Fillmore Hugh McCain and the late Mabel Lewis McCain.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Dewberry McCain and is survived by two daughters, Janet Bartley and her husband, Dennis, of Virginia Beach and Kathy Triplett and her husband, Heyward, of Portsmouth; two sons, David McCain and Doug McCain of Portsmouth; a stepson, Roy C. Shipley and his wife, Susie, of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, Jay, Amy, Brian, Meghan, Mallory, Katelyn, Nathan, Allison, and Andrea; one great-grandchild, Marlee; a sister, Marian M. Magee of Franklin; and a special friend, Florence D. Taylor of Portsmouth.
He was a resident of the Cradock area for over 55 years. He attended Duke University where he played football. Mac's love of athletics led him to a career of more than 52 years of officiating with the Southeastern Football Officials Association. He participated in the Portsmouth Senior Olympics and was a member of the Portsmouth Sports Club and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Mac was a loyal friend to all who knew him and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, by Dr. David R. Denny. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portsmouth Sports Club Scholarship Fund or Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Capital Campaign.
