Barton George Lane Jr. was born on October 9, 1916 at San Antonio, Texas, the son of George Barton Lane Sr. and Elise Brown Lane. He was a descendant of Thomas Lane of Jamestown, Virginia, one of the earliest members of the colony. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Texas. He received an appointment to West Point and in 1935, he joined the USMA Class of 1939. He graduated in the top third of his class of 456 graduates. Upon graduation, he received his commission in the Field Artillery. He earned his MA from Columbia University. On March 20, 1943, he married Dorcas Scarborough in Paris, Texas. He served during World War II in the field artillery. From 1946 to 1949, he served with the Air Materiel Area in Spain and later was a military attaché in Columbia. From 1950 to 1953, he was a USMA instructor in the Social Sciences Department where he taught contemporary political history. From 1954 to 1956 he was with military intelligence in Korea and from 1956 to 1960 he was at the Pentagon. From 1960 to 1963 he was military attaché at Chile. From 1963 to 1966 he was stationed at San Antonio. From 1967 to 1969 he was Deputy Chief of Staff of Intelligence, Communications Zone, Europe in Germany. In 1969, he retired from the Army as a colonel. He and his wife moved to Sarasota, Florida. They both audited courses at New College of Sarasota and the Institute of Lifetime Learning. He died at age 80 on Thursday, February 27, 1997 at Sarasota, Florida. Survivors include his wife, son and daughter-in-law of Belmont, Massachusetts; son and daughter-in-law of Croton-on-Hudson, New York; four grandchildren and one brother-in-law of Paris, Texas. The Episcopal Chaplain at his funeral at West Point used the "Cadet Prayer" book was used by the Episcopal Chaplain at his funeral at West Point. He was interred at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
