Robert was raised at Hyde Park, a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, where his father was first a florist and later a printer. He was the son of English immigrant parents, Frederick William Brookes and Elizabeth Mist Brookes. After his mother died in 1888, the family relocated to Morgan Park, on the far south side of Chicago, and then to Calumet, a suburb on the south side of Chicago. Robert married to Grace Inez Greenman on 24 September 1909 at Morgan Park. They made their home first at Calumet where Robert was a clerk for Armour and Company. They relocated to Hoyne Avenue about 1918 when Robert was a Transfer Superintendent of Armour’s produce department. They relocated to South Irving Avenue about 1930 when Robert was a cheese company department manager. Robert and Grace were the parents of three children; Robert MacClure Brookes, Junior, Helen Olive Brookes, and James Greenman Brookes.
