A Memorial Marker was placed in 1997 to honor James' memory. James is not actually buried here, but his parents are. Most likely, James is buried in the Washington Confederate Cemetery in an unmarked grave. There is a monument at that honors the unknown Confederate soldiers here.

James was the son of John Barrett and Cynthia A. Hurt.

James fought in the Civil War rising from the rank of Sergeant to Captain in Co I 37 Va Inf CSA. A Roster of 37th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment can be seen at this link (including James' name)---

James died at the Battle of Sharpsburg. This was the bloodiest one day Battle in American History. 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. James was one of them.

The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln's issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

The Washington Confederate Cemetery in Hagerstown, Maryland, is the final resting place of Confederates who died in the Maryland campaigns of the Civil War. The names of those buried there is uncertain for a number of reasons.

The Confederates after the battles at South Mountain and Sharpsburg did not bury their dead because they were retreating to Virginia. This task was left to Union soldiers, who buried their own first, and then the Confederates. Most were buried where they fell, and names of the deceased, where known, were written on whatever material was to hand. Where there was no identification, bodies were buried in trenches, as in the "Five trenches supposed to contain 250 unknown, in Wm. Rulett's field along Bloody Lane."

In 1869 Governor Bowie requested Thomas Boullt of Hagerstown, Maryland, one of the Trustees for Maryland at the Antietam National Cemetery where the Union dead were buried, employ agents to go over the battlefield and mound up the trenches and graves of the Confederate dead, to make careful notes of the locations and, as far as possible, to identify the dead. Today, this list is known as the Bowie List.
