Lura was born in 1872 in the country home in Monroe County, Michigan, which had been built by her grandfather Royal Potter, who had died in the Civil War. Her grandmother Mary Ann Potter had subsequently remarried and had moved to her husband’s home in nearby Grafton, and her parents were living in the homestead and running the farm when Lura was born.
Lura was a sickly baby, her parents were young, and her grandmother’s new husband had died a few months after Lura’s birth, so her grandmother offered to care for Lura in her own home, as her own child. So at the age of nine months old, Lura was entrusted to the care of her grandmother Mary Ann. The next year her father Elmer went off to medical school, and her mother Elva moved in with Mary Ann as well and was reunited with Lura. While there she gave birth to another girl, Lillian.
In 1876, Lura’s parents and baby sister moved to Holland, Ohio, where her father opened a medical practice, but Lura remained with her grandmother until she was grown. On December 24th, 1892, she was married in her grandmother’s home to Willard L. Hathaway, who was a cabinet maker. They lived in Milan, Michigan, where their first child Mildred was born, then in Northville, Michigan, where their son Wilfred Voce was born. Sometime after 1900 they moved to Chicago, where their son Parma was born in 1909, followed by Edna Rae in 1916. Lura’s sister Pearl and her family moved to Chicago as well, perhaps at the same time as Lura. Voce died in Chicago in 1908, but his remains were transported to Carleton, Michigan, for burial in the family plot.
In 1941, Lura’s husband Willard died, aged 70. Three years later, her daughter Edna Rae died, at age 28, leaving a husband and young daughter. Lura died in 1957. All are buried in Chicago.
