Jacob Christlieb was the son of Friedrich Carl Christlieb and Anna Catharine Engle. Jacob went by the name Chrislip and/or Crislip after moving to the part of Virginia which is now West Virginia. He was born in Germany 1749, married Nancy Singer in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Settled near Philippi, West Virginia about 1785, on a tract of wild land about 800 acres, known in those days as a "Tomahawk Right," and held peaceable possessions upwards of forty years when an adverse claimant appeared. The length of the period of uninterrupted possession vested title in Jacob Christlieb where he and his wife lived the rest of their lives and raised their family.
