William was actually born in Michalovce, Czechoslovakia. He immigrated to Italy during World War II. He was interned in Ferramonti until the camp was liberated. After the war, he, his wife, and two children were considered 'apolyde' (stateless residents), a designation that allowed them to apply for refugee status in the United States. They moved to New York and became American citizens.
