In about 1860 he married Bridget McAvoy in San Pablo, California, the daughter of Bernard McAvoy and Isabella Gallagher and niece of Fathers Hugh Patrick and Joseph A. Gallagher.
John served as the City Supervisor of San Francisco from 1863-1865 and as a California State Senator from 1893-1895.
While visiting his sister Mary Jane (Mrs John Scott) in NY, he took ill with Bright's disease and died.
