Brandt, Norbert Emil

Norbert Emil Brandt, age 92, of Manitowoc and a 25 year former resident of Vilas County, died Saturday evening, October 10, 2015, with his family at his side at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Norbert was born on July 23, 1923, in Fennimore, a son of the late Emil and Leona (Scott) Brandt. He graduated from Fennimore High School at the age of 16 and then enrolled at Platteville College. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and then returned to Platteville College, graduating with a degree in Agriculture. He married the love of his life, Mary C. Gilberts, in Fennimore, they enjoyed over 68 years of marriage together. After graduation from Platteville in 1949, Norb became an instructor of the World War II Veterans farm training program in Wonewoc, Wisconsin. Two years later he accepted a position as Manitowoc County Dairy Agent through the University of Wisconsin Extension. Norb judged multiple dairy cow competitons at County Fairs throughout the state of Wisconsin. He coached three successful Dairy Judging teams to success as State Champions in Wisconsin. During the later of his years as a dairy agent, Norb was one of three extension agents assigned to investigate the problem that Wisconsin feeder pig producers were having marketing hogs. As a result of that investigation, Norb was an integral part of establishing Wisconsin Feeder Pig Marketing Co-op. One year later Norb left his position with UW Extension to accept the position as Procurement Manager of Wisconsin Feeder Marketing Co-op . A position he held until 1967 when he again was an intregal part of establishing Midwest Livestock producers. From 1967 to 1972 Norb helped form the company and served as production manager. In February of 1972 Norb became the general manager of Midwest Livestock Producers serving in that capacity until his retirement at age 70 in July of 1992. During his tenure as manager Norb also served on numerous State and National boards including National Feeder Pig Marketing Assocation, Livestock Marketing Association, Livestock Conservation Institute, National Livestock and Meat Board and Wisconsin Beef Council. During his retirement, Norb served as Executive Director of Wisconsin Independent Livestock Producers. A position that allowed him to work out of his retirement home in Eagle River and later back in Manitowoc. Norb retained that position until 2010. Throughout his career, Norb continued to be an advocate for many aspects of agriculture and the community, giving his time and energy in a humble and tireless way . Attributing his dedication and energy to "agriculture vigor". During his leisure time, Norb enjoyed his family and friends. Spending time Up North, winters snowmobiling with the " Apple Dumpling Gang", ice fishing and telling many fish stories. Norb was an active member of the St. Germain Lions Club serving on community projects He could also be seen as Santa Claus during the annual community Christmas Party. Norb was very proud of his participation in the annual St. Germain Stump Dump Pageant and also of his tenure as" Ms Stump Dump".

Survivors include his wife; Mary Brandt; his children: Jennifer and Gerald Tollefson, Manitowoc, JoAnn and Richard Wenzel, Rural Reedsville and Bruce B. Brandt, Louisville, Ky,; his granddogs: Mitchell, Merlot, and Brie Tollefson; his grandchildren: Tanya (David) Stuebs, Aaron (Tonya) Wenzel, Amanda (Nick) Holschbach and Jacob (Cassie) Wenzel; and his great grandchildren: Ali Hansen, Taran Stuebs, Brady Stuebs, Mason Wenzel, McCoy Behnke, Myah Behnke, Blase Wenzel and Parker Wenzel. He is further survived by a sister: Marjorie Kerr of Portage; a sister-in-law: Sylvia Gilberts of Prairie du Chien; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister: Betty (James) Smith and brothers-in-law: Robert Kerr, Max Gilberts, Paul Gilberts and Billy Gilberts.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, October 16, 2015, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, 1416 Grand Avenue, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier with entombment at Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum, Kossuth, at a later date. Military honors will be accorded immediately following the service by members of V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659 of Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 Noon. There will be no Thursday evening visitation.

Memorials in Norbert's name will be used to establish the Norbert E. Brandt Agricultural Scholarship at UW-Platteville.
