Louis Brandes, age 77, of 1020 South 12th St., Manitowoc, died early Tuesday morning, May 26, 2009, at his residence.

Louis was born March 6, 1932, in Green Bay, son of the late Louis and Anna (Reimer) Brandes. He graduated with the class of 1951 from Reedsville High School. Louis enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and fought in the Korean War until his discharge in 1955. He married the former Jeanette Sickinger on June 13, 1953, at St. Casimir's Church in Northeim. Louis was employed for 38 years at Brillion Iron Works retiring in 1994. The couple moved to Manitowoc four years ago from the town of Maple Grove. Louis was a member of Holy Family Parish in Brillion, Catholic Knights Branch 80 of Reedsville and Amvets Reedsville Post 1032. He enjoyed woodworking and reading.

Survivors included his wife: Jeanette Brandes, Manitowoc; six children and their spouses: Sr. Linda Brandes, Bapchule, Ariz.; Dennis (Kim) Brandes, Rockwood; Annette (Greg) Guex, DeSoto; Cheryl (James) DeRoy, Rosamond, Calif.; Tim (Nancy) Brandes, Forest Junction; Gloria (Tom) Brandes-Kuptz, Palatine, Ill.; nine grandchildren: Brian Brandes; Joseph DeRoy; Beth DeRoy; Steven Guex; James Brandes; Ryan Brandes; Erin Brandes; Melissa Brandes; Zachary Brandes; one great-grandchild: Mackenzie DeRoy; two brothers and one sister-in-law: Elroy (Lorraine) Brandes, Brillion; Ralph Brandes, Collins; one sister-in-law: Clarabelle Ruh, Brillion. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Leon, Norman and Lester Brandes; four sisters: Geraldine Krueger, Luella Zachowski, Bernice Zastrow and Delores Peik; two sisters-in-law: Georgiana Brandes and Betty Brandes; three brothers-in-law: Elmer Krueger, Harry Zachowski, and Herman Zastrow.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Holy Family Parish, 1100 West Ryan Road, Brillion. The Rev. Tom Long will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Military graveside services will be held at the church following Mass with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, 1500 Hwy 310, Manitowoc.

Relatives and friends may call at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Funeral Home, 818 State St., Manitowoc, on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. There will be a parish prayer service Friday at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. led by Deacon Steve Letourneaux. Catholic Knights Branch 80 of Reedsville will pray the rosary at church at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.
