On Jan. 6, 2009, Dannie Mack Gillham left this world to be with his Lord.
Dan was born April 14, 1922, in Wayside. Dan grew up in Canyon and graduated from West Texas State College with a double bachelor's degree in art and music. He served in the military during World War II and was stationed in England, France and Germany. Upon his return from the war, Dan finished his master's degree, which he had started before being drafted. The title of his master's thesis was "One GI's Experience in Europe during WWII." Dan taught piano at WT for several years and then took on teaching art and music at Summit Elementary School in Amarillo.
He later began working at the Amarillo air base, were he taught and helped write teaching programs, until the base closed. Dan was a very accomplished artist and began pursuing this as a full-time career, he continued with his artwork and was known for putting on numerous art shows through out Amarillo.
Many of you may remember Dan as a carrier for the Amarillo Globe-News, which he did for 15 years without ever missing a day. Then in 1990 he was given the Plaque of Excellence as the Best Carrier in the state of Texas. During this time he met numerous friends along his route. Dan will be greatly missed by his friends and family. His wishes were to be cremated and not have a formal funeral service, however, there will be a semi-private memorial on his birthday, April 14.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack Gillham of Odessa and Mattie "Pat" Gillham of Amarillo; and a brother, William "Bill" Gillham of California.
Survivors include a sister, Ann and husband Dr. Francis Whitesides of Borger; a brother, Jim and wife Dr. Sherri Gillham of Midland; a niece, Patsy Hanska of Las Colinas; a great-niece, Darcy Spradley of Arlington; a great-nephew, Sgt. Michael Mears and wife Kat; a great-great-nephew, Jayden Mears of Lawton, Okla.; and many loving cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Activities Fund, Heritage Convalescent Center, 1009 Clyde St., Amarillo, TX 79106, since this was where he spent the last five years of his life.
