He was born June 30, 1918, in the town of Cato, son of the late Charles and Sophie Vogel Brandl. He married the former Florence Lorenz on May 14, 1941 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Alverno. The couple owned and operated a family farm for many years. He then continued his employment at Holy Family Convent from 1959 where he was employed until his retirement. Mr. Brandl also owned and operated a small engine shop. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Alverno, the Holy Name Society and the National Association of Power Engineers.

He was preceded in death by five brothers - in-law, Joseph Miller, Victor Lorenz, Norbert Heinzen, Nic Scheisl and Marvin Junk, one son-in-law, Robert Rappel and two grandchildren, Michelle Clark and Alex Brandl.
