Joe graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1946 and attended Fort Scott Community College, and then went on to Kansas State University. He served in the US Army during WWII with the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in Japan with HQ’s Troop 2nd Squadron, and 7th Cavalry Regiment, performing duties of Supply Sergeant. Joe received the Army of Occupation Medal serving in Tokyo, Japan, and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a member of Olsen Frary Burkhart VFW Post 1165 of Fort Scott.
Joe was a farmer and rancher and owned and operated a 3,000 head commercial feedlot in the 1960’s near Garland, Kansas. He also farmed many acres of row crops including soybeans, corn, wheat, and milo.
Survivors include one son, one brother, and one granddaughter. In addition to his wife Margaret, Joe was preceded in death by his parents.
Following cremation, Lela Simpson will conduct Graveside Services for Joe 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2015 at the Memory Gardens of Bourbon County Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral home. Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Detail. The family will receive friends Sunday evening May 3, 2015 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW and left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, PO Box 309, Fort Scott, KS, 66701.
