Sarah Virginia "Jennie" Leonard was born on February 13, 1872, in Reidville, South Carolina. At the time, her father James Gilland Leonard, who had been a soldier in the South Carolina 13th Infantry Regiment, was 33 and her mother, Caroline Cornelia "Carrie" (Yates) Leonard, was 32. Her mother, prior to marrying James G. Leonard in 1869, had been briefly married in 1865 to Rev. William Robinson Stoddard, who died suddenly of an illness just 99 days after the wedding while on a visit to his parents in South Carolina. Sarah's half-brother, William Francis Stoddard, was born the following year on March 19, 1866. Around 1874, young Sarah's family had migrated west to Bastrop County, Texas where her parents had a farm. On September 6, 1896, she married Hosea Newton Barksdale in Kaufman County, Texas. Sarah and her husband both worked at the North Texas Asylum in Terrell, Texas for a few years before moving to Abilene, Texas where they kept a 5 and 10 cent store until Mr. Barksdale went bankrupt in January 1908. In about 1915, Sarah and her husband relocated to Brawley, California where she remained until the last days of her life. She died on August 21, 1930 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 58. She was laid to rest in a grave (unmarked) at Forest Lawn (Glendale) on August 23, 1930. Her brother, Rev. C.S. Leonard, is buried in the same cemetery.
