Lawrence Nelson (1935 - 2015)

PORTVILLE - Lawrence S. Nelson of Portville, retired from NYSDEC of Woodlin Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 14, 2015) at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville following a long illness.

Born on Aug. 30, 1935, in Buffalo, he was the son of Lawrence and Grace Bradley Nelson. On April 28, 1962, in St. Philomena's Roman Catholic Church in Franklinville, he married Joann R. Moranski, who died Oct. 8, 2015.

Mr. Nelson was a 1953 graduate of Fredonia High School and a 1957 graduate of Cornell University with a degree in wildlife biology. He was employed for over 40 years by the NYSDEC, serving in various locations in the state and retiring from the Allegany office.

He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. Mr. Nelson also enjoyed reading and history, and he loved his dogs.

He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Rocky Mountain Foundation and the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Nelson of East Aurora and Pamela (David) Frentz of Cattaraugus; a son, Lawrence (Anne) Nelson of Otego; four grandchildren, David and Emily Frentz and Daniel and Patrick Nelson; and two sisters, Joyce Van Note of Hamburg and Grace Scherer of Greenville, S.C.

Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Ellicottville.
