Mary was not born in Michigan. She was born in either Indianapolis or in Mississippi. I am almost sure it was Indianapolis.
Why the misunderstanding? I think that is easily explained. One time, when I was searching for Mary's mother's family, I was reading a Mississippi census. All through that census film was "MI" for people's births. I doubt a whole county of people in Mississippi were born in Michigan. Don't you? Apparently MI was being used to abbreviate Mississippi even back then. Either that or the census taker was confused.
