William David Cowlishaw Sr was born about 1839 in Tennessee, and he was the son of John James Cowlishaw (ca 1800–ca 1859) and Alsey (Hurst) Cowlishaw (ca 1798–ca 1876).
He was married on June 17, 1856 in Montgomery County to Sarah Jane Powell (1837–1902). [NOTE: The informant on William David's Death Certificate - his youngest daughter Minnie, who was married to James H Smiley - INCORRECTLY listed his parents as W D Cowlishaw and Sarah Powell!]
A steamboat Captain living at 312 Main Street, Nashville, William was about 72 years old and a widower when he died at home of acute gastritis on March 12, 1911. Burial was two days later in Spring Hill Cemetery.
