Richard Gowen, age 74, died Friday, July 18, 2003 in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Lincoln. Resident of Aurora.
Dick was born on the family homestead near North Loup. There, he attended country school through the 8th grade and was the only one in his class.
He then attended North Loup High School where he graduated in 1947.
He attended college for four years at the University of Nebraska majoring in Agriculture.
While in college, he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and worked in the UNL dairy barn.
After graduating from UNL in 1951, he enlisted in the Army serving 3 years during the Korean War. Part of his tour was spent in Okinawa as a company clerk and in Army Intelligence.
After being discharged from the Army in October 1953, he came to Aurora to farm near Stockham. He farmed from 1956 to 1965 when he took a job managing the feed mill at the Aurora Co-op. He remained at the Co-op until 1981, then worked for Farmland Industries as a feed specialist until 1984.
In recent years, Dick was retired and spent many hours in his woodworking shop. He was a member of St. Mary's Church since 1956; and was a 4-H Leader for many years.
He enjoyed showing off his collections; showing Valentines and tools to local clubs, the manor, the museum, and most recently at Auroran Days.
Interment in Aurora Catholic Cemetery.
