Olympic Gold Medalist. He was a weightlifter who captured the gold medal in the 90 kg event at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. Prior to his years of weightlifting competition, he served in World War II with the 184th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He entered his first major weightlifting competition at the 1947 World Championships in Philadelphia and earned a silver medal in the +82.5 kg event. His later achievements at the world championships included three golds (1951, 1953, and 1954) and two silvers (1962 and 1963). He also earned a gold medal in the +90 kg event at the 1955 Pan American Games. He competed in four Olympic Games, earning one gold (1952), one silver (+90 kg 1948), and two bronze (+90 kg 1960 and +90 kg 1964). He missed the 1956 Olympics because of back problems. During his long career in weightlifting (1947-1972), he set 13 official and 11 unofficial records. In 1997, he was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of fame. He was also honored by the city of Dearborn, Michigan with the naming of a park after him. He passed away while in hospice care.
