Kathleen "Dee" Currie Johnson, Pittsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at a hospice in Topeka, Kan., after suffering a stroke. She was 77 years old.

Her family provided the following information. Born April 27, 1928 in Manhattan, she was the daughter of Roy and Helen Currie, who farmed near Manhattan and later Westmoreland. She was active in 4-H livestock projects as well as sports while growing up. She attended school in Manhattan, including two years at Kansas State University. On Feb. 6, 1949, she married Robert "Bob" Johnson, who survives of the home. They raised six children.

Kathleen started a nursing career in 1949. She worked as a nurse's aide and nursing specialist at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center of Pittsburg for almost 40 years. Her tireless work and caring nature earned her the nickname "Saint Kathleen" from colleagues at Mt. Carmel. In her spare time, she enjoyed volunteer work, gardening and travel.

Kathleen was a genuine, selfless person who truly lived a Christian life. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Pittsburg. She touched many lives and had countless friends. She was a loving wife and mother who made each son, daughter and grandchild feel special. She served as a positive role model to all.

A coach's wife for 30-plus years, she could be found in the stands or with her ear to the radio, cheering on Bob's basketball teams. She was an avid fan of the K-State Wildcats to the end, traveling to Manhattan to enjoy a double-header basketball game on Feb. 4.

Surviving are her children: Chris and wife Carolyn Johnson, of Fort Smith, Ark.; Eric and wife Mary Sue Johnson, of Webb City, Mo.; Ellen and husband Chet Wamser, of Admire.; Joni Jones, of Baldwin City; Jerilyn and husband Dean Houghton, of Polo, Mo.; and Russell Johnson, of Pittsburg; nine grandchildren: Kyle Johnson, of Washington, D.C.; Cory Johnson, of Fayetteville, Ark.; Brett Johnson, of Fort Smith, Ark.; Rachel Johnson, of Springfield, Mo.; April Johnson, of Pittsburg; Hannah Wamser, of Winfield; Josie Wamser, of Admire; Brian Jones and Katie Jones, of Baldwin City; and a brother, Roy G. Currie Jr., of Westmoreland. Preceding her in death was a sister, Genie Williams.
