Mary was the sixth of 15 children born to Pardon Mawney and Experience Gardner of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. She was married in South Kingstown, RI on 9 July 1810 to Elisha Reynolds Potter, the son of Colonel Thomas Potter and Elizabeth Reynolds. Elisha had previously been married to Mary (Gardner) Perkins who died in 1809. Elisha R. Potter was a member of the U.S. Congress 1796-7 and 1809-15, and in 1818 an unsuccessful candidate for State Governor. He was a very large man with a vigorous personality, according to his son, Elisha.
