CSA Senator. A native of Scott County, Kentucky, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee in 1833, set up a successful law practice and quickly became a leader of the Whig Party. While in Kentucky he served in that state’s legislature from 1831 to 1833 and later he was a member of the Tennessee legislature in 1851. He was an excellent orator and traveled the state in support of Whig causes. In 1853 he lost a bid to become Tennessee’s governor to Democrat Andrew Johnson. From 1862 to 1865 he served as a Confederate Senator from Tennessee. After the war he returned to Clarksville where he continued his law practice and remained active in politics, as a member of the Democratic Party.
