The decedent was born in German Prairie Oct. 21, 1838, and was a son of Samuel and Lucretia Houston, the former a native of Virginia and the latter a native of Kentucky. His father, Samuel, came to Sangamon county in 1827, making the trip in a prairie schooner. The family settled on a farm of 900 acres in German Prairie, which the father of Samuel Houston purchased.
Miletus Houston was educated in the district schools of this county and worked for his father on a farm until he was 20 years old and then followed farming on his own account until 1859, when he began teaching school. He taught school in German Prairie, near Mt. Pulaski, and in 1862 moved to Bloomington, where he remained for eighteen months and then returned to Springfield.
Mr. Houston and Eliza W. Miller were married at German Prairie Jan. 7, 1862. She was a daughter of George H. and Polly Miller, also pioneer residents of Illinois, who came from Kentucky overland in 1829, settling at German Prairie.
The decedent is survived by one sister, Mrs. Marietta Judson of Springfield, and four sons, Edward, Samuel, John and William Houston, all engaged in the contracting business in Springfield, together with thirty-one grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One son, William Houston, is a former alderman from the First ward. Politically, Mr. Houston was a Republican and for several years took an active part in Springfield politics. He cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln for president. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 11-9-1915
