Obituary from Elwood Call-Leader, Thursday, June 5, 1947: Ara Smith, 78, residing at 1805 South Sheridan Street, died at his home at 12:15 o'clock this morning of complications following a year's illness. Born May 21, 1869, in Cass County, he was the son of Isaac and Amanda Smith. He was married to Lida O. Bright on April 17, 1896. He was a retired mill employee and a member of the United Christian church. Survivors include the widow and ten children - Mrs. Charles Beard of Deputy, and Homer, Charles, William, Earl, Riley Smith, Mrs. John Kelley and Mrs. Vera Cox, all of Elwood. Edward Smith of Orestes, and Mrs. William (Sarah) Groman of Muncie. There are forty-eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; a brother Ira Smith of Elwood, and a sister Mrs. Lydia Anderson of Indianapolis. The body was removed to the Clark Chapel and was returned to the residence this afternoon. Funeral rites will be conducted from the United Christian church on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. Edward VanBuskirk, pastor, will be in charge. Burial will follow in the City cemetary
