Nina Kathryn Mulligan/Brooks Hammett, formerly of Vienna, passed away in Ontario, Oregon, Sept. 19, 2008, following a short illness. She was 87.

Born in Parkersburg on May 20, 1921, to Norma Ione and Charles Michael Mulligan, she attended local schools and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1938. On March 31, 1941, she married Arch B Hammett Jr., and they remained devoted to one another for almost 60 years until his death in 2000. Education was important to Nina and she extended hers with course work at Marietta College until the family moved to Alaska. She continued to further her education at local colleges there as well as the University of Washington. Nina and Arch later moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and then returned after retirement to Vienna, WV

While living in Vienna, Nina was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Parkersburg. Following Arch's death, Nina lived with her daughter, Marjorie, in Santa Ana, Calif., for seven years. She recently moved to Ontario, Ore., close to daughter, Kathryn and her family.
Local organizations benefited from her work wherever she lived and she made many friends through these activities. Nina particularly loved to work with genealogy. She had put together several family history books and kept detailed records of her family history.

Nina is survived by her children, Kathryn (Floyd) Gordon of Payette, Idaho, Marjorie (Ronald) Corner of Santa Ana, Calif., and Arch (Holly) Hammett of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren, Stacy (Garrett) Jacoby, Paul (Tiana) Gordon, Dawn (Mark) Woodward, Glen Gordon, Tammy (Philip) Fruge', Laura (David) Tompkins, Brian (Stacie) Corner and Rob (Robin) Hammett; 14 great-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews and their spouses; and several friends of her children who looked to her as a second mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch Hammett Jr.; her parents; her sisters, Norene Kelly and Norma Jean Fitch; and two great-granddaughters.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Bishop James Robrecht officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today and from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
