On July 12, 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate N.C. 62nd Infantry Regiment, Co. A, at Waynesville in Haywood County, North Carolina. He was at the Confederate mass surrender at Cumberland Gap in September 1863, sent to the Union POW Camp Douglas in Chicago, Ill., and died there Jan. 22, 1865.
He was a son of Marvel Hice and Mary Bradshaw Hice and the husband of Sarah Jane Hooper Owens Hice.
