John Manuel was the oldest child of John George Hake and his first wife Susanna Miller. According to York County, Pennsylvania records he was born Jan 17, 1823 and Christened on May 8, 1824 at Quickel's Lutheran and Reformed Church in York. The cemetery records in Ohio give his date of birth as February 22, 1827.

John M. married Almira Hogle on February 14, 1854 in Trumbull County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth Hogle. Their six children were:

2 Charles F. (Carrie St. John)
3 Joseph, Sr. (Sade Ellen Frazier)
4 Nora (S. Wallace Bailey)
5 Dora Ida (Wilford S. Clay)
6 Clyde (died at one week old)

Almira died in 1878 and John married his second wife Elizabeth Feister on April 10, 1879. Elizabeth was born in 1837 in Newton, Trumbull County, Ohio and died there on June 21, 1887. They did not have children. John married his third wife Hannah Mable Hake on September 4, 1891 in Trumbull County, Ohio. Hannah was the daughter of Frederick John and Anna Mary (Hewitt) Hake. John Manuel's great grandfather Jacob and Hannah's great grandfather Conrad were brothers.
