Tillie was the sixth child, and third daughter, of Ben (Bernhard) and Emilie Stein. Tillie's first husband was Ignatz Bodendistel, with whom she had one child, Adolph. Ignatz committed suicide, leaving Tillie with a child with a serious degenerative disease. Approximately one year after his death, Tillie married George Hoffmann and they lived in St. Louis for their entire married life. Adolph was the only child Tillie had, and he lived with Tillie and George until his death in 1926.
