He was a farmer and he served as Private with Company F, 108th Regiment, Virginia Militia, Confederate Army during the Civil War. Jim and his brother Brownlee Parker both enlisted on March 24, 1862 in Union, West Virginia. They were sons of Elizabeth Young and James Parker.

Jim was probably born about 1831. His mother Elizabeth would have been 52 years old in 1842. Jim was listed as age 19, born about 1831, in the 1850 census; listed as age 38, born about 1832, in the 1870 census; and listed as age 42, born about 1838, in the 1880 census.
