The circumstances, as we learn them from Dr. Morgan, the family physician, who was immediately called, are about as follows: Mrs. McConnell was seated in the house, about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and observing from the window a commotion, near by, among a lot of young lambs, which were attacked by hogs, hurried to the rescue, accompanied by her niece, Mrs. Salisbury. As the ladies arrived, a large hog seized one of the lambs, which fact greatly excited Mrs. McConnell, who suddently threw up her arms and falling back into the arms of her niece, immediately expired.
She had been enjoying her usual good health, just previously, and her death is attributed to the sudden shock to her nervous system, and heart disease. The sad and unlooked for event cast a gloom over the entire community.
Mrs. McConnell was a most estimable lady, who was greatly endeared to numerous friends in Springfield and throughout the county. Besides the bereaved husband, she leaves eight children, the eldest of whom is Mrs. DeWitt Smith, to mourn their irreparable loss. Illinois State Register, Thursday, May 2, 1878.
"The funeral of Mrs. A. B. McConnell will take place from the residence of F. Fassett, Esq., No. 311 South Sixth street, at 2 o'clock this afternoon." Illinois State Register, Springfield, Illinois, Friday, May 3, 1878.
