Melvin Coyle was the youngest of nine children born to his parents, Henry and Mary Elizabeth Travis Coyle. By the time he is about age 15, both his parents have died, and for a time he lives with his older brother Albert's family. He moves west from Minnesota as a young man, lives in California for a time, then moves to Idaho. In Idaho he works in mining. He marries his wife Una. Later, he and Una live in Portland, Oregon. Melvin Coyle lives to age 63.
