Martha Jane Cronk was born to Asahel and Mary James Cronk. Originally from New York, this family moved to Wisconsin in the 1850s, settling in Walworth County. It's possible that Martha Jane was already married to John Shippy when she traveled to Wisconsin. Although John and Martha Jane Shippy had 5 children based on Census info for 1860 and 1870 in Walworth County (Caroline, Harriet Emma, Elmer R., George W. and Asahel), John has yet to be found on any census information. (In death notice of Martha Jane in 1895, John Shippy is described as dying nearly 40 years previously) We do know that Mrs. Martha J. Shippy and children moved to Boone County, Illinois in 1872. In December of 1873, Mrs. Martha J. Shippy married Parkhill E. Sherman in Belvidere/Boone/Illinois. In Martha Jane's obituary in 1895, it says that M/M Sherman had conducted the American House for two years, one of the most well known hotels in Northern Illinois. Martha Jane dies in 1895 after suffering from heart disease for some time.
